Porsche 718 gts recall: The Zunsport Solution

Porsche has recently sent out a recall order to customers who own the 718 Boxster and Cayman after a mechanical error was spotted. This is a sign of something serious enough to warrant Porsche getting directly involved, offering to carry out repair work for free. Unfortunately, early photographs show that their proposed solution may not be up to the aesthetic standard of the 718 series. 

Why the recall?

The Porsche 718 GTS recall covers both the Boxster and Cayman and was issued when it was found that drivers who were throwing used cigarettes out of their windows could potentially set fire to their cars. The side air intake vents have been found to potentially suck used cigarette butts into the engine whilst the car is in motion, creating a dangerous situation. 

Of course, one solution would be to avoid throwing your cigarette butts out of the window. Porsche itself has issued letters to customers instructing them about the recall, reminding us that there is a "danger of fire due to the disposal of burning cigars or cigarettes. Cigarettes or cigars can be blown into the air inlets by the air flow and cause a fire in the engine compartment." 

Porsche are encouraging users to bring their vehicle back to be retrofitted with air vent grilles, which will take around two hours and have no cost to the owner. Unfortunately, early photographs taken by customers who have followed this process are not promising.
