Car showrooms were given the go-ahead to re-open by the government on Monday, 1st June.

Social Distancing And Other Precautions

Both car garages and showrooms are now exercising social distancing rules and other precautions. Some garages that chose to stay open during the lockdown gave staff a strict handwashing and hand sanitisation routine, and also required them to wear gloves. Cars are now wiped down before and after work is carried out, staff numbers on site have been reduced, and interaction between staff and customers is kept to a minimum. And of course, a two-metre distancing rule is in place in many car garages and showrooms as part of social distancing. Online booking systems are being utilised, and some car garages are offering collection and delivery services which negate the need for customers to take their vehicles to the garage themselves. For car sales, zero contact handovers are being completed, and other garages are offering online advice which allows customers to complete some simple tasks at home.

Should I Take My Car In For A Service?

It should be noted that only essential repairs should be carried out during the lockdown period. An announcement that MOTs have automatically been extended by six months was made by the government. This means that if your MOT expired on or after 30th Match, you don't need to take it to a garage for a check. As long as it is roadworthy, you can continue to drive it. But if your car has a serious issue which could constitute a danger to your driving, then you are permitted to take it to a garage for an assessment and any necessary repairs. The work that can wait is general basic maintenance or minor problems which do not make driving unsafe. In many cases, you might be able to undertake this kind of work yourself.
